2005 Canada $5 Coloured Silver Maple Leaf (TAX Exempt)
Known as the Broadleaf Maple or the Oregon Maple, this majestic tree can be found throughout the southwestern region of British Columbia. Indigenous peoples used the Bigleafs’ wood and bark to make numerous implements. They also valued its wood as a fuel source because it burns hot and clean. In fact, if a stump and its emerging shoots were properly managed, a single tree could provide a steady supply of firewood for many decades.
The low sugar concentrations in its sap make the Bigleaf one of the least popular sources for the maple’s famed syrup. In contrast, the taste of its young shoots is legendary.
