In 1774, Spanish sailor Juan Josef Perez Hernandez led a maritime expedition north with a crew from Mexico aboard the frigate Santiago. During this expedition, he was the first non-Indigenous person to make a documented sighting of the Queen Charlotte Islands, the Haida Gwaii, off present British Columbia. This historical event is immortalized in this Canada Voyage of Juan Perez 1999 Proof Sterling Silver Dollar from the Royal Canadian Mint. Here are portrayed the Santiago and representatives of the Haida people rowing in the shining waters. Made from 92.5% silver, this coin celebrates the 225th anniversary of the enterprising voyage, and comes presented in a dark green clamshell display case with a certificate of authenticity.
